Stub-and-Banner Tables

Stub-and-Banner tables, or Banners for short, are a way to display several two-way tables in a compressed form.

This type of table is most easily explained with an example. Let's return to the survey of sports spectators example.

Note: In order to simplify matters, only the response categories Always and Usually were tabulated.

Interpreting the Banner Table

In the example table, we see the two-way tables of expressed interest in Football by expressed interest in Baseball, Tennis, and Boxing. The table entries represent percentages of rows, so that the percentages across columns will add up to 100 percent. For example, the number in the upper-left corner of the spreadsheet (92.31) shows that 92.31 percent of all respondents who said they are always interested in watching Baseball also said that they were always interested in watching Football. Further down we can see that the percent of those always interested in watching Tennis who were also always interested in watching Football was 87.50 percent; for boxing this number is 77.78 percent. The percentages in the last column (Row Total) are always relative to the total number of cases. There are many options in the Crosstabulation Tables Results dialog that will enable you to produce different formats of banner tables; for example, you can simultaneously display the cell counts, row, column, and total percentages in the same table.
