Process Analysis - Process (Machine) Capability Analysis - Using Experiments to Improve Process Capability

The higher the Cp index, the better the process - and there is virtually no upper limit to this relationship. The issue of quality costs, that is, the losses due to poor quality, is discussed in detail in the context of Taguchi robust design methods (see Experimental Design). In general, higher quality usually results in lower costs overall; even though the costs of production may increase, the losses due to poor quality, for example, due to customer complaints, loss of market share, etc. are usually much greater. In practice, two or three well-designed experiments carried out over a few weeks can often achieve a Cp of 5 or higher. If you are not familiar with the use of designed experiments, but are concerned with the quality of a process, we strongly recommend that you review the methods detailed in Experimental Design.
