Essential Definitions

It is important to understand and define a few basic concepts in TIBCO Service Performance Manager for its effective use.

Assets

Assets are the entities that you can track to understand the health of an enterprise. They have life-cycle events associated with them. They are usually created, started, deleted, and so on.

Rules

Monitoring metrics becomes easier when you create rules. Rules execute an action when a certain condition is met. They are managed by the SPM Server.

Actions

Whenever a certain condition is met or cleared, it triggers a particular action, such as sending an email, or logging an event.

There are three types of actions in TIBCO Service Performance Manager:

  • Email-Action: Sends an email to specified users.
  • Log-Action: Logs alerts at SPM_HOME\actionlogs\logaction.log in the XML or text format.
  • No-Action: Does not take any action, except for sending alerts to the Alerts dashboard.

Alerts

Every time a condition in a rule is set or cleared, the corresponding actions are triggered. Every action results in creating an alert on the SPM Server.
