Use the IN clause to specify whether the transaction should be operating in browse or update mode. You can freely intermingle browse and update mode transactions. Unless it is explicitly set, a transaction inherits its mode from the transaction that initiated it

The mode determines the locks taken on TDS data only. Locks taken on external data are governed by the external database. Locks on table definitions are always taken regardless of the mode. For more information about locking, refer to
Locks Taken on the Data.
If an attempt is made to update data that is persistent while executing in browse mode, the ACCESSFAIL exception is raised. For more information about exceptions, refer to
Chapter 6, Exception Handling. However, within a transaction executing in browse mode, you can update tables with temporary data (TEM, SCR, RPT, and SES tables) and EXP files.
