Rendezvous Functionality

Table 2 summarizes the areas of functionality in Rendezvous software. Each language interface provides a subset of these facilities.

Message	• Translate between universal wire format and local data formats • Manipulate messages and fields
Event	• Listen for messages by subject name • Register interest in timers and I/O events
Transport	• Define delivery scope, delivery mechanism and protocols • Connect to the network • Send messages
Queue	• Create and manipulate event queues • Dispatch events
Queue Group	• Customize event dispatch by combining queues
Certified Message Delivery	• Confirm delivery of each message to each registered recipient • Deliver messages despite process termination and restart
Distributed Queue	• Distribute a service over several processes
Fault Tolerance	• Coordinate redundant processes to achieve application-level fault tolerance
