Spotfire® User Guide

AI insights

With AI insights, you can trigger AI agents, called insight agents, to analyze your data and help you uncover insights. The agents present their findings and suggest next steps, such as recommended visualizations, calculated columns to add, or other ways forward. You can then verify each finding before taking any action, which ensures that you always remain in control of the decision-making process.

Before you begin

  • You must be an author with the AI insights license feature, and the analysis must be in Editing mode.
  • An administrator must register and give you access to an AI model on the Spotfire server. See Managing AI models in the Spotfire Server and Environment - Installation and Administration Manual for more information.
  • The insight agents you want to use must be pinned or added to the analysis.
  • The data you want to analyze using AI insights must be imported (in-memory data).
Note: All AI-generated output can contain errors. When using AI insights in Spotfire, you should therefore always verify that any findings or recommendations are accurate. For more details, see https://spotfi.re/ai-transparency.

About this task

You can run insight agents from the dedicated AI insights panel, or the floating toolbar in a visualization.

Working with the AI insights panel

About this task

From the panel, you can trigger insight agents, adjust which context to analyze, and review the findings and recommendations presented by the agents. Previous findings are saved during a session, so that you can revisit and explore them later.

Procedure

  1. On the menu bar, select View > AI insights to open the panel.
  2. Specify what context to include when running the insight agents. By default, the context is the active visualization including any marked data. At the top of the panel, you can see the name of the active visualization and the number of marked rows included.

Tip: To exclude marked data from the context, click the X.
  3. Click the Insights button to trigger multiple agents and run a broad insight discovery, or open the menu to the right and select a specific agent tailored to your data and industry.
Note: Only pinned insight agents are shown in the menu. See Pinning action mods, to learn more. You can also click Find more insight agents, to open the Add-ons browser and search for insight agents available on the Spotfire Community.
  4. A card is added in the panel for each agent that is triggered, and you can follow the progress in the card. If an agent prompts you for more context or direction during progress, provide it to help the agent focus on the relevant aspects of your data.
  5. When an agent has finished its analysis, a finding is presented in the card with a title and short summary. Click the card to explore the finding.

  6. In the detailed view of a finding, one or more recommendations or suggested next steps are shown, and you can click to apply the ones that seem relevant to your analysis.

Using the floating toolbar in a visualization

The quickest way to analyze marked data is from the floating toolbar in your visualizations.

Procedure

  1. In a visualization, mark the data you want the insight agent to focus on.
The floating toolbar is shown at the top of the visualization.

Tip: The colored circle to the right indicates which marking is in use for the visualization and will be included in the context. This can be valuable if you have more than one marking in the analysis.
  2. Click the Insights button to trigger multiple agents and run a broad insight discovery, or open the menu to the right, and select a specific agent tailored to your data and industry.
If the AI insights panel is not already open, it will open when an agent is triggered. The following steps are the same as described above from step 4.

Hiding the floating toolbar

If any data is marked in a visualization, the floating toolbar is shown when you hover over the visualization. You can hide the toolbar and still run the insight agents from the panel.

Procedure

  1. On the menu bar, select View > AI insights to open the panel.
  2. Open the settings menu from the title bar of the panel.
  3. Clear the check box Show floating toolbar in visualizations.
The floating toolbar will no longer be shown at the top of any visualizations.
