Adding data from a TIBCO Data Virtualization external library

If you have added your TIBCO Data Virtualization (TDV) server as an external library in Spotfire, you can search and view data from TDV directly in the Files and Data flyout.

After you have configured the integration, you have access to the data on the configured TDV server. To access the data from other TDV servers, you can create individual data connections.

Before you begin

You must add your TDV server as an external library in Spotfire by setting a preference in the Administration Manager preferences. See Configuring an external library for TIBCO Data Virtualization.

Adding data from a TDV external library to a Spotfire analysis

In Spotfire, you can browse and select from all the databases, schemas, catalogs, and tables you have access to in TIBCO Data Virtualization. Your data is available directly in the Files and data flyout.

Procedure

Click to open the Files and data flyout.
Select Data catalog.

Note: Your system administrator can set a custom display name in the Administration Manager preferences.
Double-click a database from the list to open it. Similarly, navigate through the schemas and catalogs until you reach the table you want to add. Double-click the table to add it to the analysis.

Note: When you add data from a TDV external library, you cannot select to include or exclude certain columns; you always add the whole table to the analysis.
In the installed client, you can edit your data connection after adding the table to your analysis, if you want to add or remove data.
The final step is a summary view of the data you are about to add to your analysis. Here, you can choose how the data will be added. You can Import the data, or keep it External (in-db analysis), both options supporting On-demand. To finish and add the data table, click OK.

Troubleshooting

The following are some common issues you might encounter.

About this task

I cannot see a Data catalog item in the Files and data flyout

Before you can see the Data catalog item and browse and search TIBCO Data Virtualization data directly from the Files and data flyout, you or your system administrator must configure the integration in the Administration Manager. See Configuring an external library for TIBCO Data Virtualization for more information.

Another reason why you cannot see the Data catalog item could be that your system administrator has specified a custom display name for the library. Ask your system administrator what they called the TIBCO Data Virtualization integration.

I can see a library item, but it is not called Data catalog

If you can see a library item in the Files and data flyout, but it is not called Data catalog your system administrator might have configured a different name for it. Ask your system administrator if they set a custom display name for the TIBCO Data Virtualization.

I can browse and search data from TDV, but the data I need is on a different server

You can always only add one server to one TDV integration. If you want to connect to a different server than the one that is configured, you have two options:

You or your system administrator must configure another TDV integration instance connecting to the server that you need access to.
Create a new data connection to your TDV server. In the connection dialog you can specify which server you want to connect to.
