Using predefined color schemes

You can color visualization items using a predefined color scheme. A predefined color scheme can be used as it is, or as a starting point for any adjustments of the coloring.

About this task

Which predefined color schemes are available differs depending on type of data values in the column selected on the Color by axis. Some of the color schemes have built-in color rules.

Procedure

  1. In the visualization properties dialog or popover, locate the Colors or Color section. In the visualization properties panel, add or expand the Color by section.
  2. Make sure the column you want to color by is selected on the Color by axis.
  3. Depending on which client you use, click either or . In the visualization properties panel, open the menu in the upper right corner of the Color by card and select Color schemes.
  4. Select a color scheme to apply it to the visualization. Any color rules in the applied color scheme are shown in the legend. See below for more information about the available color schemes.

Example

Predefined color schemes for continuous columns Predefined color schemes for categorical columns
Option Description
Top n Items representing values from Min to Max get a single fixed gray color, and a rule states that the ten items with the highest values in the data get an orange color.
Bottom n Items representing values from Min to Max get a single fixed gray color, and a rule states that the ten items with the lowest values in the data get an orange color.
Above x Items representing values from Min to Max get a single fixed blue color, and a rule states that the items representing values above average get an orange color.
Below x Items representing values from Min to Max get a single fixed blue color, and a rule states that the items representing values below average get an orange color.
2 colors Items representing values from Min to Average get a blue color, and items representing values from average to Max get a red color.
3 colors Items representing values from Min to Q1 get a blue color, items representing values from Q1 to Q3 get a green color, and items representing values from Q3 to Max get a yellow color. To learn more about quartiles, see Percentiles and Quartiles.
Positive and negative Items representing positive values get a green color, and items representing negative values get a red color.
2-point gradient A color scheme with a gradient transition from light blue to dark blue between Min and Max.
3-point gradient Items representing values from Min to 0.00 are colored with a gradient transition from red to white. Items representing values from 0.00 to Max are colored in a gradient transition from white to blue. The Min and Max points are defined with custom expressions to ensure that items representing positive values are always colored in a blue nuance, and negative values are always colored in a red nuance.
Min-average-max Items representing values from Min to average are colored with a gradient transition from green to black. Items representing values from average to Max are colored in a gradient transition from black to red.
Exclude outliers Items representing values from LIF to UIF are colored with a gradient transition from light blue to dark blue. One rule states that items representing values greater than UIF should be white. A second rule states that items representing a lower value than LIF should also be white. To learn more about outliers, see Adjacent Values and Outliers.
Spotfire continuous The default color scheme for continuous columns.
Spotfire continuous classic The default color scheme for continuous columns used in Spotfire 6.5 and earlier.
Spotfire categorical The default color scheme for categorical columns.
Spotfire categorical classic The default color scheme for categorical columns used in Spotfire 6.5 and earlier.
Blue/Gray/Green categorical A variant of the default color scheme for categorical columns with only one main color.
Accessible categorical (for light/dark theme) A color scheme for categorical columns with a palette that is compliant with the WCAG 2.1 and conforms with Level AA or higher for the contrast between text and background. There are two variants, one adapted for the light theme and one for the dark theme.
