Waterfall chart

A waterfall chart shows how a value changes after being affected by various factors that either increase the value, or decrease it. The resulting value is then presented.

The waterfall chart can, for example, be useful for visualizing the development of a value over time or for visualizing the contributions of different factors to a total.

The starting value and the resulting value in the visualization are represented by bars, and the value changes in-between are shown as floating blocks that indicate the ups and downs. As a means to follow the development of the value from start to end, transition lines can be added between the different blocks. See also Creating a waterfall chart.

By default, positive value changes are indicated by a green color, and negative value changes by a red color. If you want, you can specify another coloring.

If applicable, bars representing intermediate calculated totals can be shown.

You can adjust the scales and scale labels, as well as other axis settings, from the visualization properties for each axis, and you can add features such as gridlines or zoom sliders.

There are also plenty of other configuration settings available in the visualization properties, like the option to change the orientation, to show one waterfall per categorical color or value on the category axis, to specify the behavior when trellising, to change the bars and block width or transparency, and so on. You can also sort blocks within each category axis value in the Color by card in the visualization properties panel. If you are using a Date, Time or DateTime column, you can compensate for missing values.

All visualizations can be configured to show data limited by one or more markings in other visualizations only (details visualizations). Waterfall charts can also be limited by one or more filterings. Another alternative is to configure a waterfall chart without any filtering at all. See Adding data limitations for a visualization for more information.

You can show data from multiple data tables in the same visualization if a proper data table matching is available. For more information, see Multiple data tables in one visualization and Column matches.
