Standardizing Data

The Standardization of Values dialog box (displayed when you select Standardize from the Data tab or menu) contains options to standardize all values of the selected variable(s) in the active spreadsheet. While processing data from these variable(s), the currently specified case selection conditions and case weights are taken into account.

In standardization, all values of selected variables are replaced by standardized values, which are computed as follows:

Std. Score = (raw score - mean)/Std. deviation

Use the Standardization of Values dialog box to select the variable to be standardized. If the standardized variable has any text labels, the corresponding numeric values (assigned to the text labels) are adjusted accordingly. Otherwise, after standardization, most values would lose their alphanumeric components. The first six significant digits are used as numeric equivalents of text labels.
