Multiple Linear Regression Startup Panel - Advanced Tab

Select the Advanced tab of the Multiple Linear Regression Startup Panel to access the options described here. This tab contains more options than the Quick tab, including the option to use a correlation matrix as an input file format.

Variables

Click the Variables button to display a standard variable selection dialog box in which you select the variables that will be used in the regression analysis (a correlation matrix will be calculated for all variables that are selected).

Input file

Use the Input file drop-down list to select either Raw Data input or a Correlation Matrix previously created via Multiple Regression, another STATISTICA procedure (e.g., Basic Statistics and Tables, Factor Analysis, Canonical Analysis, or Reliability), or by entering matrix data into the spreadsheet (see Matrix file format). Note that if your input file consists of correlation coefficients only (e.g., from a published source), and no means, standard deviations, or N is available, you may simply assume standardized data (mean=0, standard deviation = 1) and an N of, for example, 100 (N must be greater than the number of variables in the analysis). You will first need to add these four cases (means, standard deviation, cases, and matrix) to your spreadsheet before you can run the analysis. Of course, in the results, the descriptive statistics for each variable are not meaningful in that case, however, the multiple regression analysis can be performed based on the correlation coefficients alone.

Advanced options (stepwise or ridge regression)

Select this check box and then click OK in the Multiple Regression Startup Panel to display the Model Definition dialog box. Use the options in the Model Definition dialog box to specify the type of regression analysis (i.e., stepwise, ridge, etc.) to perform. When you clear this check box and then click OK in the Multiple Regression Startup Panel, STATISTICA will accept the default selections (i.e., a standard regression model which includes the intercept) and immediately display the Multiple Regression Results dialog box.

Review descriptive statistics, correlation matrix

Select the Review descriptive statistics, correlation matrix check box and then click OK in the Multiple Regression Startup Panel to display the Review Descriptive Statistics dialog box. Use the options in the Review Descriptive Statistics dialog box to review detailed descriptive statistics (and pairwise N, if Pairwise deletion of missing data was requested) for the selected Variables (see above). When you clear this check box and then click OK in the Multiple Regression Startup Panel, STATISTICA will display the Multiple Regression Results dialog box. Note that if both the Advanced options (stepwise or ridge regression) and the Review descriptive statistics, correlation matrix check boxes are selected, the Review Descriptive Statistics dialog box will first be displayed, and when you click OK in this dialog box, the Model Definition dialog box will be displayed. Note that this option will not be available if Batch processing/printing is selected.

Extended precision computations

Select the Extended precision computations check box in order to use the extended precision algorithm in generating the input correlation matrix that is used for multiple regression calculations. This option is useful if the data follow a very rare pattern of so-called small relative variance. The default double precision calculations performed in Multiple Regression feature precision optimizations and offer superior accuracy and for almost all data sets obtained from measurements (i.e., not artificially created), and will produce results identical to those which can be obtained by using the extended precision option. Note this option is only available when Casewise missing data deletion has been selected.

Batch processing/reporting

Select the Batch processing/reporting check box to perform the analyses for a list of dependent variables, automatically creating all major regression results (in a workbook, report, etc., depending on the current selections on the Output Manager). The default setting of the option is interactive processing (i.e., the Batch processing/reporting check box is cleared; in this mode you can determine interactively which spreadsheets to send to a report). In the Batch processing/reporting mode, STATISTICA will perform the specified regression analysis (or set of analyses if more than one dependent variable was specified), automatically create all results (e.g., in a workbook, report, etc), and return to the Multiple Linear Regression Startup Panel without additional user input. This option is available only if the Advanced options (stepwise or ridge regression) check box is cleared.

Print/report residual analysis

This option is available (applicable) only if Batch processing/reporting is selected. Select the Print/report residual analysis check box to include the spreadsheet with various residual statistics for each case in the output that is automatically generated.
