Formats - Overview
A format is a group of formatting options that you can save with an assigned name for future use. Formats can be assigned to numbers as well as text.
Ribbon bar. Select the Format tab. In the Block group, click Format Manager to display the Format Manager.
Classic menus. From the Format - Block submenu, select Format Manager to display the Format Manager.
You can click the Edit button to display the Edit Format dialog box, which contains a wide range of font, border, alignment, and number formats that can be included in a format.
Formats incorporate maximum design power with a minimum amount of effort on your part. They can be used to apply a suite of formats without having to apply each formatting option separately. The use of formats also ensures that your formatting choices are consistent. Formats can be saved for future use in other spreadsheets and can be renamed at any time.
For example, if you want to format all numbers in a specified (highlighted) group of data to be bold, red, 12 point Courier font, this would normally involve selecting the desired cells and then applying the individual formats (that is, changing the font style to bold, changing the font color to red, changing the font size to 12 point, and changing the font to Courier). By using a format that encompasses all of these formatting preferences, you can simply apply the format to the selected cells in the spreadsheet, and each of the four distinct formatting changes are made in one step.
