Box/Whisker More Options

Click the More button in the Box/Whisker dialog box (as well as in the Graph Options dialog box) to display the Box/Whisker More Options dialog box. Use these options to further customize the manner in which the individual elements of the icons that make up the box and whisker plot are computed.

Box

Use the options in the Box group box to customize the elements of the box in the box and whisker plot.

Value

The Value drop-down list contains options to assign a statistic to the box drawn in the box and whiskers plot. The options available in this box depend on the Middle point that you selected (see Plot: Box/Whisker). For the Median middle point you can select Percentiles, Min-Max, and Constant (draw a box to enclose a fixed-value interval around the middle point). For the Mean middle point, you can select Std. Dev. (standard deviation), Std. Err. (standard error of the mean), Conf. Interval (confidence interval for the mean), Min-Max (minimum and maximum value), and Constant.

Coefficient

You can also specify a value in the Coefficient edit field by which the selected Value will be multiplied to determine the range. If the specified Value is Constant, then the specified constant will be added/subtracted from the chosen center point (mean or median), to define the range of the box around that center point.

Whisker

Use the options in the Whisker group box to specify how the ranges of whiskers are computed.

Value

The options available in the Value drop-down list depend on the Middle point that you selected (see Plot: Box/Whisker). For the Median middle point, the available choices include Percentiles, Non-Outlier Range (see Outliers), Min-Max (minimum and maximum values), and Constant (draw the whiskers to enclose a fixed-value interval around the middle point). For the Mean middle point, available options are Std. Dev. (standard deviation), Std. Err. (standard error of the mean), Conf. Interval (confidence interval for the mean), Non-Outlier Range (see Outliers), Min-Max (minimum and maximum value), and Constant.

Coefficient

You can also specify a value in the Coefficient edit field by which the selected Value will be multiplied to determine the range. If the specified Value is Constant, then the specified constant will be added/subtracted from the chosen center point (mean or median), to define the range of the whiskers around that center point.

Outliers

Use the options in the Outliers group box to control the display of outliers and extremes. Select Outliers, Extreme, or Outliers & Extremes in the drop-down box.

 Coefficient

Specify a coefficient in this edit field that will be used to determine the outlier or extreme value range; see Outliers and Extremes for additional details.

Display raw data

Select this check box to display the raw data points.

Jitter

Use the options in this group box to jitter the data points, i.e., modify the original position of the data point from the center of the graph in order to more easily identify/brush overlapping points.

Off

When you select Off, no jitter is applied to the raw data points, outliers, and extremes.

Sequential

When you select Sequential, the jitter is applied sequentially to the raw data points, outliers, and extremes. The jitter is applied such that the first case in the data set is maximally shifted to the left and the last case is shifted maximally to the right.

Random

When you select Random, the data point is randomly shifted within the available range.  

Width

With this option, you can specify the maximum jitter width defined as percentage of box width. Possible percentages range from 0 to 250.

Note:

Trim distrib. extremes. Use the Trim distrib. extremes field to specify the percent of cases to be "trimmed" from the extremes (i.e., tails) of the distributions of cases for the selected dependent variables. For example, if you specify 10%, then for a variable with 100 cases, STATISTICA removes the 10 cases with the lowest values and the 10 cases with the highest values for the respective variable from the graph, and uses only the 80 remaining ("middle") cases. If you enter a value for Trim distrib. extremes for the mean-based box/whiskers, then the so-called "trimmed means" will be used in the graph. The trimming is performed on the complete data set before grouping. See the next option to trim groups separately.

Trim each group separately. Select this check box to trim each group in the plot separately.

Multiple box layout

The options in the Multiple box layout drop-down box are used to control the display of the Box/Whiskers in your graph when you select multiple dependent variables with the Multiple graph Format (as specified on the 2D Box Plots dialog box - Quick tab). Select Shifted to display a series of box & whiskers plots for the selected dependent variables in different colors, side by side. Select Overlaid to display a series of box & whiskers plots for the selected dependent variables in different colors, one on top of the other.
