Loading Data from Google Analytics

The Google Analytics connector gives you access to your Google Analytics data, and you can import it into Spotfire for further analysis. To learn more about Google Analytics, refer to the official Google Analytics documentation.

Note: The Google Analytics connector only supports importing data (in-memory). Keeping the data external, for in-database analysis, is not supported.

Loading Data from Google Analytics:

  1. Click Files and data .

  2. In the Files and data flyout, click Connect to.

  3. In the list of connectors, click Google Analytics.

  4. In the Google Analytics flyout, click New connection.

  5. In the Google Analytics Connection dialog, click .

  6. In your web browser, follow the login instructions. That is, choose or add an account, provide credentials when necessary, and allow access.
Comment: When you have logged in to your Google Analytics account, return to your Spotfire client.

  7. In the Load data from Google Analytics dialog, select which Google Analytics account, property and view you want to load data from.

Comment: The selected data will become a data table in Spotfire.

  8. Click Continue.

  9. In the left part of the Load data from Google Analytics dialog, all the metrics and dimensions are grouped together in categories. Click on the plus sign next to the category name to expand a category and see the metrics and dimensions.

  10. Select the metrics and dimensions of interest. Each metric and dimension will become a column in the new data table when loaded into Spotfire.

Response: The selected metrics and dimensions are added to the list to the right in the dialog.

Comment: You can select a maximum of ten metrics and seven dimensions. This is due to a limitation in Google Analytics. Note that some combinations of metrics and dimensions will not be valid. For the latest information about which combinations are valid, see the official documentation for Google Analytics.

  11. Optionally, you can change what Segment to load data for. By default, the segment All Users is selected.

Comment: System segments are segments that are available to all users of the same account. Custom segments are segments that have been defined by yourself or your company.

  12. Optionally, you can change what Date range to load data for.

Comment: By default, the predefined range Last 30 days is selected, but you can change to another predefined range, specify your own range, or select to Let the end user specify range.

  13. Click OK.

Response: The selected metrics and dimensions are loaded into Spotfire.

Note: If the combination of selected metrics, dimensions, and date range results in too few hits for each row, the result might be that no data is loaded. This is due to a threshold defined in Google Analytics. The threshold is there to make sure it is not possible to view interests and demographics for individual users. To learn more about this, refer to the Google Analytics documentation.

Google Analytics in Spotfire Automation Services

If you want to use an analysis file that contains a connection to Google Analytics in Spotfire Automation Services, you should embed the data source credentials in the analysis file.

Embedding credentials with the Google Analytics connector works differently from other connectors, and it is the simplest method for using Google Analytics connections in Spotfire Automation Services. Instead of storing your username and password, a token is saved in the analysis file. The token grants read access to your Google Analytics data from Spotfire clients.

To embed credentials for a connection in an analysis file:

  1. In an analysis with a Google Analytics connection, click Data > Data Connection Properties.

  2. In the Data Connection Properties dialog, select your Google Analytics connection and click Settingsā€¦.

  3. In the Data Connection Settings dialog, on the Data Source tab, click Settingsā€¦.

  4. In the Data Source Settings dialog, on the Credentials tab, click Yes, save credentials with the connection data source.

  5. To save your changes, click OK in all the dialogs you opened when you performed this task.
