Creating a map chart

A map chart positions your data in a context, often geographical, using different layers. The layers can be either data layers, such as marker layers or feature layers, or reference layers, such as map layers, Tile Map Service layers (TMS), Web Map Service layers (WMS), or image layers. By adding different layers to the map chart, you can configure the map to suit your needs. Each layer also contains a number of properties specific to the layer. You can configure the properties for the map chart itself as well as for all layers.

Before you begin

See Map chart for a description of the concept.

Procedure

  1. On the authoring bar, click Visualization types to open the flyout.
  2. Drag the Map chart visualization type to the wanted position on the analysis page.
A suggestion of a map chart is presented.
  3. Follow the steps in Adding layers to add more layers to your map chart.
Tip: You can reuse the settings of an already existing layer instead of adding a completely new layer. See Duplicating a layer for detailed instructions.
  4. Click the label Map chart at the top of the layer list to review and configure the generic map chart properties. Here you can for example change the coordinate reference system or how to navigate the map chart.
Tip: To better spread values on top of a background image, you can specify the ratio of data values on the imaginary X- and Y-axes in the map chart properties under Appearance and Ratio settings. By changing the ratio you can stretch the data range so that markers are evenly distributed over an area even if the actual values on the axes are of different dimensions. For example, if your X-values range from 0 to 10 and your Y-values range from 0 to 100, you can set the Y ratio to 10:1 for an even distribution of values.
  5. Click on the different layers in the layer list to review or configure layer specific properties.
