Spotfire® Server and Environment - Installation and Administration

Spotfire licenses and license features

To determine what functionality users in your Spotfire environment should be able to access, you assign licenses to user groups. Each license includes the permission to use a certain set of features, and you can further tailor a group's access to functionality by switching on or off individual license features.

Licenses

A license in Spotfire assigns the right to use a certain set of capabilities and features in Spotfire, rather than the use of a specific "out-of-the-box" application. The licenses correlate to different user types; users with edit permissions who create Spotfire applications, users who explore data using Spotfire applications built by others, and users who can only open applications for viewing purposes.

Tip: For information on how to set the product license for a group, see Setting the license and license features for a group.

New and legacy licenses

Commercially, Spotfire is licensed with product licenses. The licenses that you can assign to groups in Spotfire also correspond to certain commercial licenses or to certain type of roles.

Depending on your commercial agreement, you use either the new or the legacy product licenses. The difference is the license names, and also the types of users and capabilities that they correspond to.

Important: As a Spotfire administrator, you are responsible for assigning licenses to user groups so that your company's use of Spotfire complies with the product licenses defined in the commercial agreement.

The product license model to use in your environment is determined by your current contract. If you are not sure about the product license model of your contract, contact your Spotfire Account team.

When your commercial agreement is updated to use the new product licenses (Data Science, Analytics, Analysis Consumer, Analysis Viewer), you must change the license model in your environment accordingly. See Changing the product license version.

Setting the product license version in your Spotfire environment

You can configure your Spotfire environment according to if you use the new (Data Science, Analytics, Analysis Consumer, Analysis Viewer) or legacy (Analyst, Business Author, Consumer) product licenses. Make sure you set the product license version according to your contract, so that you can easily assign users the functionality they should have access to accordingly. See Changing the product license version.

Below are high-level descriptions of the licenses. For details on which capabilities are included in the licenses, see License feature reference.
