Spotfire Server and Environment - Quick Start

Spotfire product licenses

The access your analysts and consumers have to Spotfire is determined by a combination of licensing of features, product licenses, product license models, and license types.

License features are used to provide product functionality to users, such as the ability to run advanced analytics or to edit data sources for information links. License features are granted by the server administrator to groups of users. Planning for feature access and the licenses needed is covered extensively in Groups and license features. This section discusses product licenses and license models, and how those licenses work with license features. It also covers the environment license types: production and non-production.

Commercially, Spotfire is licensed by using product licenses. (The license features assigned to a group can determine which product license a user must be granted and vice versa.) A product license assigns the right to use a certain set of capabilities and features in Spotfire, rather than the use of a specific "out-of-the-box" application.

As an administrator of the Spotfire system you are responsible for assigning license features to user groups so that your company's use of Spotfire complies with the product licenses defined in the commercial agreement.

For the product license level, the following general capabilities apply, largely corresponding to license features described in License feature reference.

Product license Description
Spotfire Analyst The product license that provides the most functionality. Intended for users who want to do the most powerful data analysis and create new analyses or applications both for themselves and for other users. Certain features might not be available in the Analyst web client.
Example
The Analyst type of product license assigns the capability to set advanced data properties or write data functions using a language such as Python. Some of the capabilities might be available only from the context of an installed Spotfire application; others might be available from a Spotfire web client.
Spotfire Business Author The product license that is intended for users with less advanced authoring needs, typically analyzing data for their own use or creating content for a smaller team.
Spotfire Consumer The product license that is intended for users that need only to consume analytical assets created by other users.
Example
The Consumer type of product license assigns the capability to open and view (to consume) Spotfire analyses without regard to whether the context is a Spotfire web client or an installed Spotfire application.
