General Classification and Regression Trees Startup Panel and Quick Tab
Ribbon bar. Select the Data Mining tab. In the Trees/Partitioning group, click C&RT to display the General Classification and Regression Trees Startup Panel.
Classic menus. On the Data Mining menu, select General Classification/Regression Tree Models to display the General Classification and Regression Trees Startup Panel.
The Startup Panel contains one tab: Quick.
See also, Data Mining with STATISTICA and the General Classification and Regression Tree Models Index, Overviews, and Examples.
The Quick tab of the General Classification and Regression Trees Startup Panel presents two types of analyses: Standard C&RT and C&RT with coded design. The Quick tab also provides access to three different user interfaces available in the STATISTICA General Classification/Regression Tree module through the Specification method list.
Type of analysis
Element Name | Description |
---|---|
Standard C&RT | Select Standard C&RT to perform a standard classification and regression trees analysis for continuous and the categorical predictors, as described by Breiman, Friedman, Olshen, and Stone (1984). |
C&RT with coded design | Select C&RT with coded design to specify ANOVA/ANCOVA-like designs for the predictor variables (see Introductory Overview - Basic Ideas). For example, you could specify complete or incomplete factorial designs for the categorical predictor variables; the analysis is then performed on the coded design vectors rather than on the untransformed original variables. |
Specification method | The Specification method list presents three alternative user interfaces: Quick specs dialog, Analysis Wizard, and Analysis syntax editor. Note that these user interfaces are available in the Specification method list only when C&RT with coded design is selected as the Type of analysis. If you select the Standard C&RT type of analysis, then the only specification method available to you will be the (conventional) Quick specs dialog.
Note: the Analysis Wizard and Analysis syntax editor interfaces are identical to those used in
GLM,
GRM,
GLZ,
PLS,
GDA, and
GCHAID (a comprehensive description of the analysis syntax for specifying ANOVA/ANCOVA-like designs is presented in the context of GLM). Hence, a great advantage of this method for analyzing data is that identical predictor designs can be applied using these very different methods for analyzing regression-type problems (e.g., via
General Linear Models, various
Generalized Linear/Nonlinear Models,
Partial Least Squares methods, or
General CHAID Models) or classification-type problems (e.g., via General CHAID Models,General Discriminant Analysis models, or applicable
Generalized Linear/Nonlinear Models).

Quick specs dialog | Select Quick specs dialog and click the OK button to display the C&RT specifications dialog box irrespective of the Type of analysis selected. Use these options to select the (categorical or continuous) dependent variable, response codes (if the dependent variable is categorical in nature and you are analyzing a classification problem), count variable (optional), categorical factors, continuous predictors, factor codes, and other options. If you chose C&RT with coded design, you can also specify an ANOVA/ANCOVA-like design or model to apply to the predictor variables in the analyses. On the Standard C&RT or General C&RT General linear models specifications dialog, the Options button menu can be used to modify various computational details, while the Syntax editor button can be used to further customize the analysis. |
Analysis Wizard | Select Analysis Wizard and click the OK button to display the General Classification and Regression Trees - Between Design dialog box. You can either click the OK (Run) button to compute the results, or click the Next> button to display the General C&RT Trees Wizard - Extended Options dialog box to further customize the analysis by clicking the Syntax editor button to display the General Classification and Regression Trees Syntax Editor. In this editor, you also can open an existing file with command syntax or save current syntax in a file for future repetitive use. Note that selecting Analysis Wizard automatically moves the Type of analysis selection to C&RT with coded design. |
Analysis syntax editor | Select Analysis syntax editor and click the OK button to specify the analysis via the General Classification and Regression Trees Syntax Editor, which contains various options for specifying designs and for modifying various parameters of the computational procedures. You can also open an existing text file with command syntax, or save syntax in a file for future repetitive use. Refer to the General Classification/Regression Tree Models Syntax Overview for additional details. Note that selecting Analysis syntax editor automatically moves the Type of analysis selection to C&RT with coded design. |
OK | Click the OK button to display the respective dialog box corresponding to the option selected on the Quick tab. |
Cancel | Click the Cancel button to close the Startup Panel without performing an analysis. |
Options | See Options Menu for descriptions of the commands on this menu. |
Open Data | Click the Open Data button to display the Select Data Source dialog box, which contains options to choose the spreadsheet on which to perform the analysis. The Select Data Source dialog box contains a list of the spreadsheets that are currently active. |
Select Cases | Click the Select Cases button to display the Analysis/Graph Case Selection Conditions dialog box, which contains options to create conditions for which cases will be included (or excluded) in the current analysis. More information is available in the case selection conditions overview, syntax summary, and dialog description. |
W | Click the W (Weight) button to display the Analysis/Graph Case Weights dialog box, which contains options to adjust the contribution of individual cases to the outcome of the current analysis by "weighting" those cases in proportion to the values of a selected variable. |
