Is there a glossary of brushing terms?

The following terms are used to denote specific aspects of brushing operations.

  • Highlighted: The initial state of selected data points prior to performing some brushing action (e.g., labeling, see the term Action, below). Highlighting data points in the graph works like in word processors or spreadsheets where highlighting is a precursor to performing an action on the highlighted text (e.g., applying a font attribute such as boldface or italic). If no action is taken and you exit the brushing mode, the highlighted status of a point is hidden (not displayed), but preserved internally (e.g., is saved with the graph) and the points will be highlighted once again whenever you re-enter the brushing mode for the graph.
  • Action: An operation (marking, labeling, or turning off) performed on highlighted points. Actions are executed when you click the Update button on the Interactive tab of the Brushing dialog box (or after every operation of selecting a data point with the mouse pointer when you are in the Auto Update mode).
  • Selected: A state in which points have been highlighted or further identified by execution of some action. The selected status of a point is saved with the graph. Three selection attributes are available:
  • Marked: Identification of selected points by displaying an alternative point symbol.
  • Labeled: Identification of selected points by displaying their respective data point labels.
  • Turned off: Temporary removal of points from the display and fitted function calculations. The point values remain visible (on a darkened background) in the Graph Data Editor.
