Overview

The Spotfire platform Helm chart is an umbrella chart for deploying a Spotfire® analytics platform ⧉ on a Kubernetes ⧉ cluster using the Helm ⧉ package manager.

Prerequisites

Components

The Spotfire Server component is always installed and does not have an 'enabled' setting. All other components (Web Player, Automation Services, TERR Service, R Service, Python Service, and PostgreSQL) are disabled by default and can be enabled individually by setting their 'enabled' value to 'true'.

Note: For more advanced deployment scenarios, such as running multiple instances of a single chart with different configurations (e.g., two web players), you can deploy individual service charts multiple times. See Step 4: Deploy additional service instances (optional) for examples.

Usage

Replace all placeholders (shown in angle brackets like <NAMESPACE>) with your actual values before running the commands.

Note:

  • The Spotfire Helm charts deployed using this umbrella chart require setting the parameter acceptEUA for each chart, or the parameter global.spotfire.acceptEUA to the value true. By doing so, you agree that your use of the Spotfire software running in the managed containers will be governed by the terms of the Cloud Software Group, Inc. End User Agreement ⧉.
  • The spotfire-server.configuration.site.publicAddress field is required for all deployments.
  • You must set global.spotfire.image.registry to your private registry address where the Spotfire container images are stored.

Step 1: Create namespace

kubectl create namespace "<NAMESPACE>"

Step 2: Prepare deployment values

Complete either Step 2a or Step 2b depending on your setup.

Step 2a: Use the embedded PostgreSQL chart

This option uses the embedded PostgreSQL chart as the Spotfire database and enables all Spotfire services.

Warning: The PostgreSQL chart is included as an example and is intended for demo and testing purposes only. It is important to note that the Spotfire Helm chart does not take responsibility for data persistence in the Spotfire database. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a proper data persistence strategy in place. Failure to do so may result in data loss. Please make sure you are familiar with the documentation of your chosen database (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server) and take appropriate measures to ensure data persistence.

Create a values.yaml file (for example, spotfire-platform-values.yaml):

# spotfire-platform-values.yaml
global:
  spotfire:
    acceptEUA: true
    image:
      registry: "<REGISTRY>"

spotfire-server:
  configuration:
    site:
      publicAddress: "<SPOTFIRE_PUBLIC_ADDRESS>"

postgresql:
  enabled: true
  image:
    repository: bitnamilegacy/postgresql
  primary:
    resourcesPreset: small

spotfire-webplayer:
  enabled: true

spotfire-automationservices:
  enabled: true

spotfire-terrservice:
  enabled: true

spotfire-rservice:
  enabled: true

spotfire-pythonservice:
  enabled: true

Note:

  • The embedded PostgreSQL Helm chart requires postgresql.image.repository=bitnamilegacy/postgresql and postgresql.primary.resourcesPreset=small.
  • When using the embedded PostgreSQL chart, the PostgreSQL admin password is stored in the secret <SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>-postgresql under the key postgres-password.

Warning: Due to how the Bitnami PostgreSQL Helm chart works, if you uninstall the Spotfire platform chart and reinstall it while the PostgreSQL PVC still exists, PostgreSQL will continue using the password stored in that PVC. Delete the PVC first (kubectl delete pvc data-<SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>-postgresql-0) to reset it. This also deletes all stored data. For more information, see the Bitnami PostgreSQL bug #2061 ⧉.

Step 2b: Use an existing supported database

This option connects to an existing supported database and enables all Spotfire services.

Note: When using an existing database, you need to provide the connection details for the database. This example uses a PostgreSQL database, but you can use any other supported database. For configuration details, see the Supported database Configuration section in the spotfire-server helm chart README.

Create a secret with the database passwords:

kubectl create secret generic spotfire-database-credentials \
  --namespace="<NAMESPACE>" \
  --from-literal=spotfireDatabasePassword="<SPOTFIRE_DATABASE_PASSWORD>" \
  --from-literal=databaseAdminPassword="<DB_ADMIN_PASSWORD>"

Then create a values.yaml file (for example, spotfire-platform-values.yaml). Details of available values can be found in the values section.

# spotfire-platform-values.yaml
global:
  spotfire:
    acceptEUA: true
    image:
      registry: "<REGISTRY>"

spotfire-server:
  configuration:
    site:
      publicAddress: "<SPOTFIRE_PUBLIC_ADDRESS>"
  database:
    bootstrap:
      databaseUrl: "jdbc:postgresql://<DB_HOST>:<DB_PORT>/<DB_NAME>"
      driverClass: "org.postgresql.Driver"
      username: "<SPOTFIRE_DATABASE_USERNAME>"
      passwordExistingSecret:
        name: spotfire-database-credentials
        key: spotfireDatabasePassword
    create-db:
      enabled: true
      adminUsername: "<DB_ADMIN_USERNAME>"
      databaseUrl: "jdbc:postgresql://<DB_HOST>:<DB_PORT>/"
      spotfiredbDbname: "<DB_NAME>"
      adminPasswordExistingSecret:
        name: spotfire-database-credentials
        key: databaseAdminPassword

postgresql:
  enabled: false

spotfire-webplayer:
  enabled: true

spotfire-automationservices:
  enabled: true

spotfire-terrservice:
  enabled: true

spotfire-rservice:
  enabled: true

spotfire-pythonservice:
  enabled: true

Step 3: Deploy the Spotfire platform chart

Install the chart using the values file for the deployment path you chose in Step 2.

helm install "<SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>" . \
  --namespace="<NAMESPACE>" \
  --create-namespace \
  --render-subchart-notes \
  --values spotfire-platform-values.yaml

Then check pod status:

kubectl get pods --namespace "<NAMESPACE>" \
  -l "app.kubernetes.io/instance=<SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>"

Step 4: Deploy additional service instances (optional)

To deploy Spotfire services with different settings, deploy the individual service chart multiple times using unique release names and distinct configuration values.

Example: Deploy two web players belonging to different resource pools

This example shows how to deploy two web players in separate resource pools with a Spotfire server using release name <SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE> in namespace <NAMESPACE>.

  1. Deploy the spotfire-platform chart by following one of the examples above.

Note: Record the release name used, as it will be needed in the serverBackendAddress field (e.g., <SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>-spotfire-server).

  1. Create your resource pools in the Spotfire Server administration interface once the server is running. For more details on how to create resource pools, see here ⧉.

  2. Create a file named wp1.yaml with the following content:

webplayerConfig:
  # -- The web player resource pool name.
  resourcePool: "wp1"
nodemanagerConfig:
  serverBackendAddress: <SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>-spotfire-server
logging:
  logLevel: debug
  logForwarderAddress: <SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>-log-forwarder
  1. Create a file named wp2.yaml with the following content:
webplayerConfig:
  # -- The web player resource pool name.
  resourcePool: "wp2"
nodemanagerConfig:
  serverBackendAddress: <SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>-spotfire-server
logging:
  logLevel: debug
  logForwarderAddress: <SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>-log-forwarder
  1. After creating the YAML files, deploy the web player chart by following the steps outlined in the spotfire-webplayer chart Usage section. Use unique release names for each deployment (for example, <SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>-wp1 and <SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>-wp2) and reference the values files created in the previous steps (using --values wp1.yaml or --values wp2.yaml).

This pattern can be applied to any component to deploy multiple instances with different configurations.

Uninstalling

To uninstall the <SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE> deployment:

helm --namespace <NAMESPACE> uninstall "<SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>"

See helm uninstall ⧉ for command documentation.

Upgrading

Upgrading Spotfire Server and Spotfire services

Review the README files for the enabled component charts before upgrading. When you upgrade the platform chart, the bundled Spotfire Server and enabled service charts are upgraded together according to the versions defined by this platform chart release.

If you are using a custom values file, update it first and then run helm upgrade with that file.

Upgrading helm chart version

Upgrade the chart using the same values file you used for installation:

helm upgrade "<SPOTFIRE_PLATFORM_RELEASE>" . \
  --namespace="<NAMESPACE>" \
  --render-subchart-notes \
  --values spotfire-platform-values.yaml

Detailed instructions

For detailed usage instructions, see the README.md files of the individual components listed in the Overview section.
