Database Change Data Capture Input Adapter Sample

This sample demonstrates the use of the Database Change Data Capture Input Adapter for Oracle and SQL Server databases.

Preparing to Run the Sample

  1. Scripts are provided for Windows to configure your database for change data capture. If using SQL Server, modify setup-cdc-sql-server.sql with your site-specific database credentials. Run setup-cdc-oracle.sql or setup-cdc-sql-server.sql to configure CDC for your Oracle or SQL Server database, respectively. In addition to configuring change data capture, these scripts above create a database table, Customers, for which change activity is captured.

  2. Place the jar file containing the JDBC driver for your database -- ojdbc6.jar or sqljdbc4.jar -- on the StreamBase classpath. One way to accomplish this is by copying the jar file to $STREAMBASE_HOME/lib/ext.

Running This Sample in StreamBase Studio

  1. In the Package Explorer, double-click change-data-capture-oracle.sbapp or change-data-capture-sql-server.sbapp to open the sample application for Oracle or SQL Server, respectively.

  2. Select the adapter icon to open the Properties view for the adapter.

  3. Select the Adapter Settings tab and note that the populated values match those configured through the scripts above.

  4. Click the Run button. This opens the SB Test/Debug perspective and starts the application.

  5. In the Studio's Application Output view, observe tuples emitted on the adapter's Status output port indicating it has connected to the database and enabled CDC.

  6. Using a tool such as sqldeveloper or SQLPlus for Oracle or SQL Server Management Studio or sqlcmd for SQL Server, modify the contents of the Customers table by inserting, updating, and deleting records. If using Oracle, commit the changes to ensure the redo log gets written promptly.

  7. In Studio's Application Output view, observe tuples emitted on the Capture output port indicating changes have been made to the Customer table.

  8. When done, press F9 or click the Stop Running Application button.

Importing This Sample into StreamBase Studio

  • From the top menu, click FileLoad StreamBase Sample.

  • Select this sample from the Embedded Input Adapters list.

  • Click OK.

StreamBase Studio creates a project for this sample.

Sample Location

When you load the sample into StreamBase Studio, Studio copies the sample project's files to your Studio workspace, which is normally part of your home directory, with full access rights.

Important

Load this sample in StreamBase Studio, and thereafter use the Studio workspace copy of the sample to run and test it, even when running from the command prompt.

Using the workspace copy of the sample avoids the permission problems that can occur when trying to work with the initially installed location of the sample. The default workspace location for this sample is:

studio-workspace/sample_change-data-capture

See Default Installation Directories for the location of studio-workspace on your system.

In the default TIBCO StreamBase installation, this sample's files are initially installed in:

streambase-install-dir/sample/change-data-capture

See Default Installation Directories for the location of streambase-install-dir on your system. This location may require administrator privileges for write access, depending on your platform.
