Setup At a Glance

The two principal components of ibi Data Migrator are the Reporting Server, which includes the WebFOCUS Reporting Server browser interface, and the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface.

Note: The ibi Data Migrator desktop interface and WebFOCUS Reporting Server should be from the same release and gen. If they are not, a message appears informing you that the server and client may be incompatible and that some features may not function. It then asks if you want to continue.
  1. Install the Server on the platform that will contain your target data (this is the platform you will be moving data to).

The Server is typically installed on the platform where your data target (a data warehouse, data mart, or another type of target) will reside. Your first task is to determine that location. The remaining tasks on this list assume that your source data resides on that same platform.

Note: At many sites, source data is on a different platform from the one on which the Server is installed. If this is the case at your site, you need to install, configure, and test one or more remote servers, using the process described in Remote ibi WebFOCUS Reporting Server Setup At a Glance.
  2. For Windows platforms, the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface is installed with the WebFOCUS Reporting Server. For non-server Windows platforms, you need to do a standalone installation of the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface separately. For more information, see Install the ibi Data Migrator Desktop Interface.

The ibi Data Migrator desktop interface can be installed on any Windows computer that will be used to build flows.

As an alternative, the ibi Data Migrator Client can be installed using a UNC location and then accessed from the shared drive. For more information, see Running the ibi Data Migrator Client in Zero Footprint Mode.

Additionally, the ibi Data Migrator Client installation can be done silently. For more information, see Performing a Silent Installation.

  3. Start the WebFOCUS Reporting Server.
  4. Start the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface by opening the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface, which can be found in the Information Buildersibi/WebFOCUS 909192 Server folder or in the Information Buildersibi WebFOCUS ibi Data Migrator 909192 folder for standalone ibi Data Migrator desktop installations.
  5. Configure one or more nodes in the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface configuration file.

This step identifies the name and port of the Server you will be connecting to and adds the server name(s) to the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface server list. For more information, see Add a Node to Identify the ibi WebFOCUS Reporting Server to the ibi Data Migrator Desktop Interface.

Tip: If, during the installation of the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface, you configured it to access the Server, this step is optional. When installing a Windows server, a default LOOPBACK node is configured and usable for server access. The LOOPBACK node should not be deleted or renamed.
  6. Connect to and test the Server from the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface. You can test that the server is started and able to perform basic data retrieval (against sample data). For more information, see Test the ibi WebFOCUS Reporting Server. You can also test the server from the Start page of the WebFOCUS Reporting Server browser interface.
  7. Configure and test data adapters for the source data you will be using from the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface Adapters folder. The test verifies that the configuration was successful and you can access the data adapter.
Note: If all of your source data is stored on remote servers, omit this step and Step 8 and proceed to Step 9.
  8. Create and test the metadata for the source data from the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface. The test verifies data retrieval functionality for the specific data sources you are using. You can also create and test the metadata from the Applications page of the WebFOCUS Reporting Server browser interface.
Note: If you are using more than one data source for the same adapter, repeat Step 8 as many times as necessary before going to Step 9. If, however, you have data sources in a variety of adapters, repeat Step 7 and Step 8, then proceed to Step 9.
  9. Configure and test the data adapter for the data target from the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface. You can also configure and test adapters from the Adapters folder of the WebFOCUS Reporting Server browser interface.

This step is necessary if the data target is of a different database type than the data source(s) or if all of your data is on remote servers. After completing this step, proceed to Step 10.

Note: If you have more than one data adapter for your data targets, repeat Step 9 as many times as necessary.

Step 9 is not necessary if the data target(s) and data source(s) are of the same database type. Proceed from Step 8 to Step 10.

  10. Create and test the metadata for one or more data targets from the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface. You can also create and test the metadata from the Applications page of the WebFOCUS Reporting Server browser interface.
Note: This step assumes that you are moving data to existing target tables. If you are building new target tables in the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface, this step is not required.
  11. Open and test the sample flow dmdemo, which is provided for this purpose. For each one, run and view the last log to confirm that the Server is configured and properly processing flows. For more information, see Testing Sample Data and a Process Flow.
  12. Configure Server operations, including security, run-time IDs, and log and statistics tables. See Performing ibi WebFOCUS Reporting Server Administration Tasks.
Note: Authorize any users who will be using ibi Data Migrator from the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface or WebFOCUS Reporting Server browser interface. For details, see Authorizing ibi WebFOCUS Reporting Server Usage and Administration.
  13. Configure the application path and set up additional application directories. For more information, see Managing Application Directories and Configuring the Application Path. These procedures can also be performed from the WebFOCUS Reporting Server browser interface. For more information, see the ibi™ WebFOCUS® Reporting Server Administration manual or the WebFOCUS Reporting Server browser interface online help.
  14. Configure email notification and the scheduler from the ibi Data Migrator desktop interface. For more information, seeConfiguring ibi WebFOCUS Reporting Server Operations.

For detailed information about the WebFOCUS Reporting Server browser interface pages used to set up ibi Data Migrator for local data access, see Performing ibi WebFOCUS Reporting Server Administration Tasks and the ibi™ WebFOCUS® Reporting Server Administration manual.
