Accessing data from SAP BW
Follow the steps below to create a new connection to SAP BW, and add the data either as imported or in-database data.
About this task
Tip: To learn more about creating data connections and
working with data using the connector for SAP BW, see:
- Connector for SAP BW — Features and settings
You can connect to and access data from SAP BW. On this page, you can find information about the capabilities, available settings, and things to keep in mind when you work with data connections to SAP BW. - Working with SAP BW data in Spotfire
If you have access to data in an SAP BW system, you can use the SAP BW connector in Spotfire to connect to your OLAP cube. On this page, you can find information about how to work with your Oracle Essbase data in Spotfire - Best practices for the SAP BW connector
When you work with SAP BW data in Spotfire, there are certain restrictions in SAP BW that you should keep in mind. The following sections contain information describing common SAP BW limitations and suggestions for how you can work around them. - Prompting for SAP BW BEx variables
You can define prompting for a data connection to an SAP BW BEx query. Using prompting, you can let the end user define values for BEx variables, upon opening the connection. - Importing SAP BW data in pieces
If you want to analyze a very large amount of SAP BW data, which exceeds the limit of 1M cells, you can import it piece by piece into Spotfire. - Custom value presentation - SAP BW
For characteristics and hierarchies from SAP BW, you can select how to display the characteristic in Spotfire. A characteristic in SAP BW can have many types of metadata, such as attributes and technical names. - Details on Define Value - SAP BW
This dialog is used to specify a value for a BEx query variable. The appearance of the dialog depends on the type of variable you have selected, but a few examples are shown below:

Adding external (in-database) data from SAP BW
Follow the steps below to add a connection with in-database data to SAP BW.

Tip: Do all
of the data selection work in a shared data connection and save it to the
library instead of adding it to the analysis directly. This way you can reuse
the work you have done later, or share your selections with others.
Importing (in-memory) data from SAP BW
Follow the steps below to import data from a SAP BW cube.

Tip: Do all of the data selection work in a shared data
connection and save it to the library instead of adding it to the analysis
directly. This way you can reuse the work you have done later, or share your

Note:
- It is not possible to import multiple characteristics that belong to the same dimension.
