Interactive Drill-Down Explorer Startup Panel

Ribbon bar. Select the Data Mining tab. In the Tools group, click Workspaces and from the General Slicer/Dicer Explorer with Drill-Down submenu, select Interactive Drill Down to display the Drill-Down Startup Panel.

Classic menus. On the Data Mining – Data Mining - Workspaces – Data Miner - General Slicer/Dicer Explorer with Drill-Down submenu, select Interactive Drill-Down to display the Drill-Down Startup Panel.

The Startup Panel contains four tabs: Quick, Categorization, Review, and Options. Use the options in the Startup Panel to select variables and to perform the drill-down and drill-up (see the Introductory Overview) operations. You can also select additional variables on the Review tab, and compute for those variables various descriptive statistics and graphs. For more information, see also the Introductory Overview.

Element Name Description
Drill variables Click this button to specify the variables for the drill-down operations. A standard two-variable list selection dialog box will be displayed, and you can specify categorical and continuous variables for the drill down operation. Categorical variables typically contain information about the group, class, or code to which each observation belongs (e.g., Gender with classes Male and Female), continuous variables are those that are measured on some scale (e.g., height, weight). Different categorization methods (for determining the available subgroups for drill-down) are available on the Categorization tab for categorical variables and continuous variables.
Down Click this button to perform the drill-down operation. The Select category dialog box will be displayed, where you can select the category for the currently highlighted variable in the Drill-down variables list, on which to drill down. As described in the Introductory Overview, the drill-down operation will select for subsequent analyses (results chosen from this dialog) only those observations that belong to the selected category or class (and the selected categories or classes chosen in previous drill-down operations).
Up Click this button to perform a "drill-up" operation, i.e., to remove from the list of previous drill operations the currently highlighted variable (category) pair from the Drill-up variables list (see the Introductory Overview).
Brush Click this button to display a histogram of the currently highlighted variable in the Drill down variables list. This histogram will be displayed in a special brushing mode, along with the Brushing Commands dialog with buttons for the drill-down and drill-up operation (if applicable). You can move the brushing pointer over the histogram, click on any category (bar) of the histogram to select and highlight it, and then click the Down button on the Brushing Commands dialog, or select Down from the shortcut menu to perform the drill-down operation. No category (bar) of the histogram has to be selected to perform a drill-up operation. If you select the Auto-update all results check box (see below), or the Create stand-alone spreadsheets and graphs... check box on the Options tab  (which has the same effect, i.e., these two options are "linked" and selecting one will automatically select the other), the histogram will be displayed in a stand-alone window, and after performing a drill-down/up operation, all other spreadsheets and graphs created by the current module and displayed in stand-alone windows will automatically update to reflect the results for the most current subset (drill-down selection) of observations (see also, Auto-Updating Graphs and Summary Statistics after Each Drill-Down). Note that after each drill-down/up operation performed in the brushing mode, the program will automatically display another histogram (for further brushing) for the next variable in the drill-down/up sequence (you can use the Order option (see below) to change the order of variables in the Drill-down variables list, and hence the drill-down sequence).
Order Click this button to display the Drill-down order dialog box, which contains options to change the default drill-down order, as displayed in the Drill-down variables list. This option is particularly useful when you use the Brushing option for performing the drill-down/up operations; in that mode, after each drill-down/up operation, the program will automatically display another histogram (for further brushing) for the next variable in the drill-down/up sequence. Note that you can also reorder the sequence of variables in the Drill-down variables list directly, using the standard list-editing features (see Drill-down/up variables below).
Auto-update all results Select this check box to enable auto-updating of all results spreadsheets and graphs after each drill-down and drill-up operation; note that this option is "linked" to the Create stand-alone results spreadsheets and graphs (for brushing) option on the Options tab (i.e., if you select one option the other will automatically be selected as well), and both options have the same effect. Specifically, when these options are selected, the results documents will automatically be created in stand-alone windows that you can position on the screen according to your preferences. Then, every time you perform a drill-down or drill-up operation, all documents will automatically be refreshed (re-computed) to reflect the most current drill-down "state" (i.e., only selected cases or observations). This option is very useful for reviewing seemingly "animated" displays and graphs that will change instantly as different drill-down/up conditions are applied. See also Auto-Updating Graphs and Summary Statistics after Each Drill-Down for an example.
Drill down/up variables The Drill down variables list shows the variables currently available for drill down. The Drill up variables list contains the variable (category) combinations chosen in previous drill-down operations; these are available for drill-up, i.e., they can be selected and removed from the list of variable (category) combinations. For interactive brushing (see the Brush option above, or Auto-Updating Graphs and Summary Statistics after Each Drill-Down), you may want to reorder the items in these lists. Click the Order button and use the resulting dialog to change the order of Drill-down variables, or you can use the standard list-box editing features for reordering the items in either list. Specifically, click on the item you want to move, and move the mouse pointer to the desired location (between two other items) When the mouse pointer changes to a split-cursor , click the mouse button to move the highlighted item to the marked location.
Cancel Click the Cancel button to close the Startup Panel.
Options See Options Menu for descriptions of the commands on this menu.
Open Data Click the Open Data button to display the Select Data Source dialog box, which contains options to choose the spreadsheet on which to perform the analysis. The Select Data Source dialog box contains a list of the spreadsheets that are currently active. Selecting a new data file for analysis will terminate the current drill-down analysis, and reset all defaults.
Select Cases Click the Select Cases button to display the Analysis/Graph Case Selection Conditions dialog box, which contains options to create conditions for which cases will be included (or excluded) in the current analysis. More information is available in the case selection conditions overview, syntax summary, and dialog box description. Note that selection conditions can only be specified at the outset of the drill-down analysis; after the first drill-down operation has been performed, this option is dimmed.
W Click the W (Weight) button to display the Analysis/Graph Case Weights dialog box, which contains options to adjust the contribution of individual cases to the outcome of the current analysis by "weighting" those cases in proportion to the values of a selected variable. Note that case weights can only be specified at the outset of the drill-down analysis; after the first drill-down operation has been performed, this option is dimmed.
Weighted moments Select the Weighted moments check box to specify that each observation contributes the weighting variable's value for that observation. The weight values need not be integers. This module can use fractional case weights in most computations. Some other modules use case weights as integer case multipliers or frequency values. This option is available only after you have defined a weight variable via the W option described above.
