2D Box Plots

In box plots, ranges of values of a selected variable (or variables) are plotted separately for groups of cases defined by values of a categorical (grouping) variable. The central tendency (e.g., median or mean) and range or variation statistics (e.g., quartiles, standard errors, or standard deviations) are computed for each group of cases, and the selected values are presented in the style selected as the Graph Type on the 2D Box Plot.

General

Element Name Description
Detail of computed results reported Detail of computed results reported in the results nugget. If All results is selected, some statistics (usually for comparing means or medians; e.g., Kruskal-Wallis tests) will also be reported.
Graph type Select the type of box plot to be plotted from the Graph Type.
2D box type You can choose between two types of graph formats.
Middle point The middle point can be either the Mean or Median of the selected variable.
Pooled Variance This check box is available when you select Mean as the middle point Value (see above). The setting of this check box determines how the standard deviations and standard errors (for the means) are computed from grouped data. When the Pooled Variance check box is selected, STATISTICA computes the pooled within-group (category) variance for all groups (categories), and uses this value as an estimate of s (Sigma) when computing the standard errors for the means.

Boxes

Element Name Description
Mean Box Value The value is used to assign a statistic to the box drawn in the box and whiskers plot. You can select Std. Dev. (standard deviation), Std. Err. (standard error of the mean), Conf. Interval (confidence interval for the mean), Min-Max (minimum and maximum value), and Constant.
Median Box Value The value is used to assign a statistic to the box drawn in the box and whiskers plot. You can select Percentiles, Min-Max, and Constant (draw a box to enclose a fixed-value interval around the middle point).
Mean Box Coefficient Specifies a value by which the box value will be multiplied to determine the range. If the specified box value is Constant, then the specified constant will be added/subtracted from the chosen center point (mean or median) to define the range of the box around that center point.
Median Box Coefficient Specifies a value by which the box value will be multiplied to determine the range. If the specified box value is Constant, then the specified constant will be added/subtracted from the chosen center point (mean or median) to define the range of the box around that center point.
Connect middle points Check to connect the middle points of the box plots.

Whiskers / Outliers

Element Name Description
Mean Whisker Value Whisker is used to choose how the ranges of whiskers are computed. Available options are Std. Dev. (standard deviation), Std. Err. (standard error of the mean), Conf. Interval (confidence interval for the mean), Non-Outlier Range (see Outliers), Min-Max (minimum and maximum value), and Constant (draw the whiskers to enclose a fixed-value interval around the middle point).
Median Whisker Value Whisker is used to choose how the ranges of whiskers are computed. The available choices include Percentiles, Non-Outlier Range (see Outliers), Min-Max (minimum and maximum values), and Constant (draw the whiskers to enclose a fixed-value interval around the middle point).
Whisker Coefficient Specifies a value by which the whisker value will be multiplied to determine the range. If the specified value is Constant, then the specified constant will be added/subtracted from the chosen center point (mean or median) to define the range of the whiskers around that center point.
Outliers Used to control the display of outliers and extremes. The available choices include Outlier, Extremes, or Outlier and Extremes.
Outlier Coefficient Specifies a coefficient that will be used to determine the outlier or extreme value range.
