External Data Range Properties

Click the More button in the Returning External Data to Spreadsheet dialog box, or select Properties from the File - Get External Data submenu to display the External Data Range Properties dialog box.

Element Name Description
Name This option is present only if you reached this dialog by selecting Properties from the File - Get External Data submenu. This field contains the name of the Query.
Location These options are present only if you reached this dialog by selecting Properties from the File - Get External Data submenu. Use the options in this group box to specify the Variable No. (column) and Case No. (row) in the spreadsheet where you want the returning query to begin.
Maximum row This option is present only if you reached this dialog by selecting Properties from the File - Get External Data submenu. Enter the number of rows you want the returning query to fill. If the query has more data when that number has been reached, a message will be displayed asking if you want the rest of the data.
Fit spreadsheet This option is present only if you reached this dialog by selecting Properties from the File - Get External Data submenu. Select this check box to specify that the spreadsheet should be enlarged to accept all the data from the returning query.
Enable background refresh If this check box is selected, you will be able to continue working on the computer while the query is refreshed in the background. If this check box is cleared, you will not be able to continue working on the computer while the query is refreshed.
Include column names and place them in Select the Include column names and place them in check box to include the column names from the original database in the Statistica Spreadsheet when a query is run. Once you have selected this check box, you also need to select from the corresponding drop-down list where Statistica should place the column names - in the variable headers or the first case of data in the Statistica Spreadsheet. See the Spreadsheet Overview for additional information. Clear this check box if you do not want the column names from the original database to be included in the Statistica Spreadsheet.
Include row numbers Select the Include row numbers check box to add an additional variable to the Statistica Spreadsheet in which the row numbers from the original database will be placed. Clear this check box if you do not want the row numbers from the original database to be included in the Statistica Spreadsheet when the query is run.
Autoformat variables Select the Autoformat variables check box to automatically format the variables in the Statistica Spreadsheet according to how they are formatted in the original database. Hence, when Statistica detects that a column's format is text in the original database, the Type of the corresponding variable will be Text in the Statistica Spreadsheet. If you do not want Statistica to autoformat the variables, (i.e. the Type of each variable in Statistica will remain unchanged regardless of the format of that column in the original database) then clear this check box. See Variable Types for additional details.
If data columns are text, format variables as text Select the If data columns are text, format variables as text check box to set the variable's Type to Text when a query returns variables that contain text to a Statistica Spreadsheet. If this check box is cleared, the Type of the variable will be Double. By default, this check box will be selected. See Variable Types for additional details. This check box is available only when the Autoformat variables check box (see above) is selected.
Variables layout The options under Variables layout control the variables layout of the spreadsheet when you run a query.
If the number of columns in the query decreases This option applies only when the query is refreshed. If the query returns less data and therefore the number of variables in the spreadsheet decreases, then select from the drop-down list either to delete unused variables or clear unused variables. If you select clear unused variables, you will still have the variables in the spreadsheet, but they will contain empty cells. If you select delete unused variables, the empty variables will be deleted from your spreadsheet and the size of your spreadsheet will decrease.
If the number of columns in the query increases This option applies only when the query is refreshed. If the query returns more data, then select from the drop-down list either to always insert new variables, overwrite and insert, or overwrite. If you select always insert new variables, Statistica will add new variables to the spreadsheet for the refreshed data. The original data will not be replaced. If you select overwrite and insert, Statistica will replace the original data with the refreshed data and also add new variables for the additional data that has been returned. If you select overwrite, the refreshed data will simply replace the original data; hence, any additional data will be lost since the spreadsheet will not become larger.
Cases layout The options in the Cases layout group box control the cases layout of the spreadsheet when a query is run.
If the number of rows in the query decreases This option applies only when the query is refreshed. If the query returns less data and therefore the number of cases in the spreadsheet decreases, then select from the drop-down list either to delete unused cases or clear unused cases. If you select clear unused cases, you will still have the cases in the spreadsheet, but they will contain empty cells.
