Interactive Drill-Down Explorer Startup Panel - Categorization Tab
Select the Categorization tab of the Interactive Drill-Down Explorer Startup Panel to access options to specify the method of categorization for the continuous variables for drill-down. Note that for categorical variables, only the All distinct values option is applicable, and available.
The method of categorization specified here will only be applied to the currently selected (highlighted) variable in the Drill-down variables list, and different methods of categorization can be specified for each variable in that list.
Element Name | Description |
---|---|
All distinct values | Select the All distinct values option button to determine the categories for drill-down from all distinct values for the currently selected (highlighted) drill-down variable. |
No. of exact intervals | Select the No. of exact intervals option button to divide the entire range of values for the currently selected (highlighted) drill-down variable into the number of intervals specified in the corresponding edit field. |
"Neat" intervals; approximate no | Select the "Neat" intervals; approximate no option button if you want the category or interval boundaries and step-sizes (interval ranges) for the drill-down categories to be "neat;" that is, those values will be rounded to simple values with the last digit being either a 1, 2, or 5 (e.g., 10.5, 11.0, 11.5, etc.). In this manner, clean and easy to read categorizations (histograms) can be produced; however, the number of drill-down categories may not be exactly equal to the number of intervals requested in the corresponding edit field. |
Step size | Select the Step size option button to base the drill-down categorization (and histograms) on user-specified step sizes (interval widths). If the at minimum check box is selected, the first inclusive interval boundary for the drill-down categories will be set as equal to the minimum value for the respective (currently highlighted) variable. If the at minimum check box is cleared, the first inclusive interval boundary for the drill-down categorization will be set as equal to the user-specified value entered into the starting at field. |
Integer categories | Select the Integer categories option button to base the drill-down categorization (and histograms) on integer category (interval) boundaries and step sizes, starting with the smallest integer value found in the respective variable (currently highlighted in the Drill-down variables list). All non-integer values will be ignored. |
User-specified categories | Select this option button to display the Specify boundaries dialog box, where you can enter a list of the desired boundaries for the selected (currently highlighted) drill-down variable. For example, if you enter 1 3 4 9, then the following five ranges (i.e., categories) of values of the selected variable will be created: (1) x<=1, (2) 1<x<=3, (3) 3<x<=4, (4) 4<x<=9, and (5) 9<x. As you can see from this example, the intervals do not have to be of equal width, but the boundaries do need to be of consecutive numbers (e.g., 1 3 9, not 1 3 1 9). |
