Frequency Tables - Advanced Tab

Select the Advanced tab of the Frequency Tables dialog box to access options to specify advanced categorization methods for tables and graphs that will affect the display of spreadsheets and graphs produced using the options in this dialog box.

Summary: Frequency tables

Click the Summary: Frequency tables button to produce a cascade of frequency tables for the selected Variables, one spreadsheet per variable.

The manner in which the variables are categorized for the frequency tables is determined by the selection of options in the Categorization method for tables & graphs box (see below). The options in the Display options for frequency tables group box (see the Options tab) determine the different summary statistics that will be reported in the frequency tables. If any Tests for normality are selected ( if any of the check boxes in that group box are set, see the Normality tab), for each variable, an additional spreadsheet with the results for the respective selected tests will be displayed (test for other non-normal distributions are available in the Distribution Fitting and the Survival Analysis modules).

Histograms

Click the Histograms button to produce a cascade of histograms for the selected Variables, one histogram per variable.

The manner in which the variables are categorized for the histograms is determined by the same settings of options as in Summary: Frequency tables.

Categorization methods for tables & graphs

The options selected under Categorization methods for tables & graphs determine these:

  1. How the currently selected Variables will be categorized or tabulated for the Summary: Frequency tables and Histograms
  2. How cases are processed for Descriptive statistics.

All distinct values

Select the All distinct values option button to base the frequencies on all of the distinct values for each of the selected variables.

Select the with text labels check box to base the frequencies on the distinct text labels for each of the selected variables.

No. of exact intervals

Select the No. of exact intervals option button to divide the entire range of values for each variable into the number of intervals specified in the corresponding edit field.

Neat intervals; approximate no

Select the Neat intervals; approximate no option button if you want the category or interval boundaries and step-sizes (interval ranges) for the frequency tables to be neat, that is, those values will be rounded to simple values with the last digit being either a 1, 2, or 5 (e.g., 10.5, 11.0, 11.5, etc.).

 In this manner, clean and easy to read tables can be produced; however, the tables may not always have the exact number of intervals requested in the corresponding edit field.

Step size

Select the Step size option button to base the frequency tables (and histograms) on the user-specified step sizes (interval widths).

When the at minimum check box is selected, the first inclusive interval boundary for the frequency tables will be set as equal to the minimum value for the respective variable. When the at minimum check box is cleared, the first inclusive interval boundary for the frequency tables will be set as equal to the user-specified value entered into the starting at field.

Integer categories

Select the Integer categories option button to base the frequency tables (and histograms) on integer category (interval) boundaries and step sizes, starting with the smallest integer value found in the respective variable.

All non-integer values will be ignored (for the Summary: Frequency tables, Histograms, and Descriptive statistics options). When the with text labels check box is selected, the categories will be labeled with text labels (such as males, females) rather than integer values (for instance, 1, 2), provided that text labels are available for the respective variables in the current data file.

Specific grouping codes (values)

Select the Specific grouping codes (values) option button to base the frequency tables (and histograms) on integer categories (codes) specified by the user (via the button next to this option which displays the Select the Codes of the Selected Variables dialog box).

All non-integer values and codes that are not selected will be ignored. If no codes are specified, all integer codes found in the data file for the respective variables will be used.

User-specified categories

  1. Select the User-specified categories option button to base the frequency tables (and histograms) on selection conditions specified by the user.
  2. Click the button next to this option to display the Define Categories dialog box.

    The options in this dialog box are used to specify a set of up to 16 logical case selection conditions, defining how cases are to be assigned to categories. These logical case selection conditions can be complex, and reference more than one variable in the data file, as well as case numbers. For each case in the data file, the case selection conditions are processed in sequence, and a respective case is assigned to the first category where it fits (where the respective logical case selection condition is true).
