Nesting For Between-Groups Factors

Click the Hierarc. nest button in the GLM Between Effects dialog box to display the Nesting for Between-Groups Factors dialog box. It is also displayed when you have specified Nested design ANOVA as the Type of analysis on the GLM dialog box - Quick tab and then choose the Between effects button on the Quick Specs Dialog - Quick tab.

Specify the nested factors in the Nesting For Between-Groups Factors dialog box. When you open this dialog box, several columns are displayed (one for each between group factor) with a factor name at the top and the remaining factors listed below. To specify a nested factor:

1) Go to the column with the name of the factor (at the top of the column) that you want to designate as the nested variable;

2) In this column, select the factor(s) in which this factor is nested by clicking on the factor names to highlight them. The column will now refer to the first factor (listed at the top of the column) as "nested in" the selected factor(s);

 3) Repeat this process for each of the nested factors (in their respective columns).

Note: you can deselect a nested factor by holding down the CTRL key and then clicking on that factor.

OK Click the OK button to close the dialog box and return to the GLM Between Effects dialog or the GLM Quick Specs Dialog - Quick tab, after you have specified the nested factor(s).
Cancel Click the Cancel button to close the dialog box and return to the GLM Between Effects dialog or the GLM Quick Specs Dialog - Quick tab; any changes made are disregarded.
Note: nested designs. In nested designs the levels of a factor are nested within the levels of another factor. For example, if one were to administer four different tests to four high school classes (i.e., a between-groups factor with 4 levels), and two of those four classes are in high school A, whereas the other two classes are in high school B, then the levels of the first factor (4 different tests) would be nested in the second factor (2 different high schools).
