Values/Stats

Click the Values/Stats button in the Variable dialog box to display the Values/Stats dialog box. Use these options to view detailed information about a variable in a spreadsheet. The list box in the middle of the dialog box contains all of the values that are in the selected variable. You can resize the dialog box (and thus increase the viewing size of the list box) by dragging its corners or sides.
Option Description
Name This field contains the variable's name, which is displayed in the column header in the spreadsheet.
Long Name This field contains a longer, more descriptive variable name. Functions may be included with this description of the variable (see Functions, Formulas Overview).
MD This field is used to specify a missing data code for blank cells, or specific values that you intend to ignore in calculations. Note that the missing data code for a text data type is always an empty string.
Type This field contains the variable's data type (see Data types). If the data type is Text, it will also contain the value in the Length field after the word Text.
Format This field shows which display format accompanies the variable (see Display Formats).
OK Click this button to select values from the list. The dialog box will close.
Cancel Click this button to close the dialog box without selecting any values.
Output to Spreadsheet Click this button to create and display a spreadsheet containing the values shown in the Values/Stats dialog box. The spreadsheet will contain one variable that lists the values for the currently selected variable, or two variables if the currently selected variable contains a numeric value and a text label.
Descriptive Statistics This field displays brief descriptive statistics (N, Mean, and Standard Deviation) for the variable. For more detailed descriptive statistics, use the Basic Statistics and Tables module.
Click the copy button to copy the Descriptive Statistics to the Clipboard. Copy replaces the previous contents of the Clipboard with the contents of the Descriptive Statistics.
